Conshohocken-native General Anthony Zinni resigned last week as a special envoy for the United States State Department. He was tasked by former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with mediating the dispute between Qatar and neighboring countries.
Zinni has also served as a special envoy for the United States to Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Zinni is most noted for his military career, which included reaching the rank of general in the United States Marine Corps and serving at the Commander in Chief of the United States Central Command.
CBS News’ Margaret Brennan made several tweets about Zinni’s resignation:
NEWS: Gen. Anthony Zinni (Ret) resigned his position @statedept citing an inability to resolve the Qatar dispute. He had originally been asked by Secretaries Tillerson & Mattis to work on Middle East issues including the Middle East Strategic Alliance (MESA) initiative.

Zinni tells @cbsnews: “I resigned because I do not feel I could successfully help resolve the Qatar dispute because of the unwillingness of the regional leaders to agree to a viable mediation effort that we offered to conduct or assist in implementing.” https://t.co/obQc2nE0In
