The 60th running of the Conshohocken Soap Box Derby was held on Monday, July 4th.  Above is video from the Times Herald with an interview with race contestant Jennifer Pliszka.  This year’s event featured 34 contestants with six children in the masters division, 15 in the stock division and 13 in the super-stock division.  Matthew Burkert won first place in the stock division, Kassidy Mason won first place in the super-stock division and Laura McCaughey won first place in the masters division.  They will move on to Akron, Ohio to compete at a national level in the 74th All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship.

Sutcliffe Park was packed for the pre-fireworks festivities on July 3rd.

There were games and other activities for kids.

DeStolfos Premier Martial Arts Demonstration Team drew a crowd in the park.

Mayor Robert Frost, pictured left, and other volunteers help run the event.

Every front lawn near the park had a party outside and people were even lined up along Fayette Street.

The fireworks show was a great success and received rave reviews.

As you probably know, The StoneRose had a fire last week and will be closed until it undergoes repairs.  In good news, The StoneRose Burger was named the Best Burger of the Main Line and Western Suburbs by Main Line Today magazine.

Baldwin Flowers, which had been on East 8th Avenue for a few years and on Fayette before that, has closed.  I called the number and it was answered by Joseph Genurardi Florist in Norristown, which has acquired Baldwin Flowers.  A statement on the Genuradi’s website states that Elaine from Baldwin Flowers has retired.

In 1885 a pastor in Conshohocken  preached to be aware of the “folly and dangers of attending skating rinks.”

Last week Liam McGuigan hosted a fundraiser for Jason Salus, who is currently a member of Borough Council but is currently running for Treasurer of Montgomery County.  A bunch of local and county elected officials showed up for the event including Borough Council President Paul McConnell and William A. Holt Jr., who is running for Sheriff in Montco.

On July 4th members of the Conshohocken VFW Post 1074 participated in two events. Members raised the flag during the national anthem at the Conshohocken Soap Box Derby and marched in the Whitemarsh Township 4th of July parade with a color guard.

Conshohocken’s own Julia Pauline, Miss Pennsylvania International, threw out the first pitch at a recent Reading Phillies game.

Stella Blu is starting their Lobster Summer Special tonight (July 5th).  The menu offers two two courses for $35.00.  The menu features lobster prepared eight different ways.

Chef Michele from the Spring Mill Cafe will be at Maple Acres Farm for a cooking demonstration on Saturday, July 9th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Chef Michele promises to whip up something delectable and delicious with Maple Acre’ farm fresh produce.

Healthy Stuff

Starting July 6th, Born to Run will be combining forces with Conshohocken Health and Fitness Club for a Lafayette Hill/Conshohocken group run.  Tomorrow they will meet at CH&FC at 6:30 p.m. for 3+ miles on the Schuylkill River Trail.

Events, Happenings & Specials

This Thursday night, Stephen Phillps is holding a benefit for the L.A.R. Bike Club – Conshy Crew for the 2011 American Cancer Society Bike-a-Thon.  There will be a$10 Extended Happy Hour from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with 1/2 Bar Menu, $2 domestic bottles, $3 drafts, $5 glasses of wine, door prizes and a 50/50 raffle.

Spamps is having another Yappy Hour on Sunday, July 17th from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  As always, your pooches are welcome at the Grotto.

The Whitemarsh Business Association is having a Networking Event on Thursday, July 21st from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Totaro’s in Conshohocken. Stay tuned for more details.

Every Monday night 8 East has an all-you-can-eat Snow Crab Leg special for $21.99.

The Philadelphia Fight take on the Boston 13s on Saturday, July 23rd in their last home game before the 2011 USARL playoffs. Part of the proceeds for this match will go towards their Annual Battle to Strike Out ALS.  The Fight Vixens will be performing at all the quarters and at halftime.  The game will start at 5:00 p.m., but the gates will open for food and beer at 4:00 p.m. There will be an After Party will be at 8 East.
