Covanta is likely to restart plant at 4:00 a.m. reported on Monday that the Covanta plant in Conshohocken (Plymouth Township) had a malfunction that morning at approximately 9:30 a.m. After the malfunction, the plant vented steam which generates a loud noise.

There have been several malfunctions since December 2018 that have resulted in noise and a toxic smell (according to neighbors). Covanta has routinely denied the smell is from its plant.

Based on past malfunctions, the restart of the plant will generate the strongest smell (according to the neighbors) and noise.

The restart, according to Covanta Plymouth’s website, is now scheduled for about 4:00 a.m. The interesting thing is that it plans to contact the community to tell them of the restart one hour prior.

Here is the announcement from Covanta:

Covanta Plymouth staff is currently in the process of restoring power to the facility. Startup of the first boiler will commence once all systems have been checked following the restoration of full power.

Boiler startup is expected as soon as 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, although startup could be later. We will be contacting the community approximately one hour prior to startup to confirm the time. During the startup process for each boiler, there will be a short period of increased sound from the facility as low pressure steam is vented from the roof safety vents.

If you live near the plant, let us know what you experience in the morning.
