Proposal to expand number of retail spaces at The Metroplex in Plymouth Meeting

During the March 6th meeting of Plymouth Township’s Council, there was a presentation on behalf of the Goldenberg Group regarding expanding the number of retail spaces at The Metroplex along Chemical Road in Plymouth Meeting.

In the short term, the Goldenberg Group seeks to construct a 25,000-square-foot retail space between DSW and Barnes & Noble that would be utilized by Nordstrom Rack, plus expand Lowe’s and create a section of larger parking spaces specifically for contractors visiting that store.

As currently constructed, the shopping center which dates back to 1998, is at the max amount of square footage that is allowed by the zoning code.

Constructing the Nordstrom Rack in an area that is currently part of the parking lot, would require a zoning variance from the zoning hearing board or a text amendment from the council. The Goldenberg Group believes that the parking requirement that was required in the 1990s no longer reflects the parking needed today. It engaged a parking consultant to conduct a study to determine which portion of the parking available at the shopping center is utilized the least.

Members of the council expressed support for the plan, however, suggested that the Goldenberg Group seek zoning relief for the plan involving Nordstrom Rack and Lowe’s.

There was also a discussion about a larger, but not immediate, plan for the addition of more retail and restaurants for the property.

More to come.
