Jessica DeLuise, MHS, PA-C, a Conshohocken resident and owner of Eat Your Way to Wellness, shared with MoreThanTheCurve.com tips on how to enjoy Thanksgiving without depriving yourself or feeling horrible the next day.
Start your meal with a digestive enzyme
Take a digestive enzyme to begin your meal. Digestive enzyme supplements help break down proteins and fats you may eat throughout your Thanksgiving holiday. Digestive enzymes and probiotic foods are something you should ideally be incorporating daily. If you need a recommendation for a quality supplement, call Jessica at #484.531.2130 or email Jessica at Jessica@EatYourWaytoWellness.com.
Start with a piece of fruit
Before heading to Thanksgiving get-togethers, eat a small piece of fruit or garden salad. This will help prevent overeating later. It is especially helpful to avoid eating fried or processed appetizers that usually don’t provide much in the way of nutrition.
Hydrate Because …
Thirst can be confused with hunger and lead you to overeat. Drink a full 8 oz glass of water about 30 minutes prior to your meal and more throughout your meal. If you drink alcohol, alternate with water. This will help you to moderate your alcohol intake.
Fill Half Your Plate With …
Fill half of your plate with non-starchy vegetables – salad, green beans, brussel sprouts, carrots, or steamed kale. This will allow less room for the high calorie, creamy sides like sweet potato casserole or mashed potatoes. It also ensures you eat fiber and nutrition on Thanksgiving.
Eat LOTS of TURKEY!
Turkey provides protein that will keep you full after the meal. Enjoy white or dark meat! Turkey complies with keto and paleo diet plans, heart healthy diets, diabetic friendly diets, and is delicious!!!!
Yes, Eat Dessert!
Choose ONE dessert and enjoy it with a cup of coffee or tea. There is no reason to eat all of the desserts in one meal. There are always leftovers so if there is a second dessert you want to try, wrap it and enjoy the following day.
