Youth and Adult Chinese Summer Camps at Germantown Academy

Germantown Academy Chinese Programs is proud to announce Chinese Summer Camp for 2014. This camp is a unique Chinese immersion educational program that builds competency in Chinese language and provides hands-on understanding of Chinese culture. The camp is designed for children five to 10 years of age, and daily and weekly activities will be varied between ages.

Campers who have previously participated in an immersion program, as well as those new to a daily Chinese educational format, are welcome to register. Camp will run for three consecutive weeks, beginning July 7 and ending July 25, 2014. Campers may sign up for one, two and/or three weeks, as each week will have different components as outlined below. Camp runs daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

GA is excited to welcome Ms. Xuling Qu, Director of Modern Language Department at Girls High School in Philadelphia, as the lead teacher of theChinese Summer Camp. Ms. Qu will be developing curriculum for the teaching of Chinese language, culture and history, and will add teachers depending on the number of campers registered. Swimming will be available on several days each week. Campers will bring their own lunch and snacks will be provided.

Chinese Summer Camp Program

  • Week 1 (July 7-11) – Week 1 will be spent traveling to China (without leaving GA!) to learn about the major cities in the country, ie. Beijing and the Great Wall, Xian and the Terracotta Warriors, Chengdu and the Panda Zoo, and others.
  • Week 2 (July 14-18) – Week 2 will be spent learning Chinese customs and people’s ways of life. Chinese history, martial arts and food will be introduced. Hands-on activities will be held that include dancing, story-telling and dumpling making!
  • Week 3 (July 21-25) – Week 3 will cover Chinese traditions, such as holidays, Chinese Tea, Peking Opera, arts and crafts, calligraphy, paper cutting, and possibly a trip to Philadelphia’s historical Chinatown! On Friday, July 25, parents of the campers will be invited to an end-of-camp performance.

B. Youth Immersion Class
The third year of formal Chinese Programs designed to educate community members about the culture and language of China will begin in 2014-15. All classes take place at Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, PA, and are taught by experienced teachers who have proficiency with all levels of Chinese language.

Open to students entering Kindergarten through Sixth Grades at all school districts neighboring Germantown Academy, the Youth ImmersionChinese Language class at GA is designed to teach children whose first language is English and to immerse them in the Chinese language on consecutive days. Students will not only learn content, but also gain knowledge of the language in which it is taught.

Monday through Thursday, 4:15-5:45pm
Classes now forming on the Germantown Academy campus

Upper Dublin School District and Wissahickon School District elementary schools will provide bus transportation at the end of the school day to Germantown Academy. Parents will be responsible for pick-up at 5:45pm.

This course will provide opportunities to learn about Chinese language, culture, and history for the GA community and surrounding region.Chinese Beginner, I & II classes could be formed, as the classes will be grouped according to the student’s Chinese proficiency.

DISCLAIMER:Germantown Academy will adhere to the following: There is a minimum of 7 students needed to run each class. Class can be cancelled for lack of enrollment. If class is cancelled due to lack of enrollment, all monies will be returned to those who have already registered. Youth classes will be split between Pre-K-second grade and third-fifth grade, depending on interest.

 

C. Adult Classes

Chinese Level 1 is designed primarily for students who have little or no prior exposure to Chinese. Pinyin and simplified Chinese will be introduced. Students will learn to deal with different tasks that have immediate concern to them. Students are expected to reach the proficiency of novice-mid after completing Level 1 based on the ACTFL proficiency guidelines.

Chinese Level 2 is a continuous course of Chinese Level 1. Students are required not only to recognize the Chinese characters but also to write them from memory. Students will learn to manage different tasks in the communicative and interactive fashion. Students are expected to reach the proficiency of novice-high to intermediate-low after completing Level 2.

Chinese Level 3 is a continuous course of Chinese Level 2. Students will be in transition of phasing out Pinyin. Students will do different projects and deal with more complex tasks. Students are expected to reach the proficiency of intermediate-mid after completing Level 3. Students who wish to take level 3 but not enrolled in the previous classes should get permission from the instructor.
