During the September 21st meeting of the Plymouth Township Zoning Hearing Board, the board voted five to zero to grant a variance sought by the Borough of Conshohocken in connection with its plan for a new public works facility at 680 Colwell Lane. The property sits on the Plymouth Township side of the border with the borough and was previously home to Young Windows.

Due to the nature of a public works facility, the borough sought a variance to exceed the maximum sound levels permitted between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and during emergency situations such as a snowstorm.

Board members asked how the facility will be operated and whether there are concerns about negatively impacting neighbors. The property is within the Limited Industrial Zoning District and is adjacent to I-476. However, there is a residential neighborhood across Colwell Lane (which is within the borough). Representatives of the borough said the public works department currently operates successfully in several facilities in residential neighborhoods within the borough’s borders.

In August, Conshohocken’s borough council voted to purchase the property for $4.65 million. The sale is in the due diligence stage.
