A volunteer firefighter since he was 14 years old, Thomas Sesko always knew he wanted to join the military. Sesko went into the Pennsylvania Army National Guard because it had the best options for him to choose from for college and jobs.

“It was a means of paying for college and fulfilling a childhood dream,” said Sesko.

Sesko brought the skills he learned early on as a firefighter, such as teamwork and following instructions, with him when he joined the Army. His experience in the Army further strengthened those skills and taught him new ones. 

“I learned a lot about myself in the Army,” said Sesko. “I think it’s truly made me a better person overall.”

When Sesko returned from the Army in 2017, he joined Conshohocken Fire Company No. 2 because his original fire company closed its doors.

“The best part of volunteering at Conshohocken Fire Co. No. 2 is the comradery amongst those who have been around a while, and the acceptance we have towards newcomers,” said Sesko. “Everyone is treated with the same amount of respect and given the same opportunities.”

Whether serving as firefighters, fire police, or support staff, each member is a vital part of the team, committed to protecting the community. Similar to the military, where each individual has a unique role yet contributes to the collective mission of protecting the country, every fire company member brings essential skills and dedication to protect those they serve.

“There are many ways you can help out based on your interest,” said Sesko. “You can volunteer as an administrative member and help with fundraising, or join the water rescue team, help with technical rescue calls or drive the truck.”
