Conshohocken’s borough council to consider submitting grant applications to fund road diet program

Two items related to a road diet concept that has been discussed for several years are on the October 16th agenda for Conshohocken’s borough council. Both involve obtaining funds from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to help cover the associated costs.

While the borough has studied a road diet, nothing has yet been officially decided. You can view the presentation made in 2021 by the borough’s engineer here. As you will see, it reduces a significant portion of Fayette Street to two lanes plus a turning lane. The hope is that it would calm traffic and improve pedestrian safety along the borough’s main thoroughfare. Fayette Street is also a state road, and PennDOT must approve any change.

The first is a resolution that would authorize the borough to submit a grant application to the Local Share Account, a pool of money the state receives from the horse racing and gaming industry. Municipalities can apply for funding for “projects that improve the quality of life in the community” and use it for various purposes that would apply to a road diet, such as engineering, planning, demolition, construction, etc.

The second is also a resolution that involves authorizing the submission of a grant application. This one involves the Multimodal Transportation Fund, a state program that provides grants “to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to the residents of the commonwealth.”

You can view the full agenda here. The meeting is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the borough hall.
