Core + More, a fitness studio focused on personal training, small group fitness and pilates reformer classes, opened a few weeks ago at 918 Fayette Street. Core + More is owned by Betty Levengood, NSCA-CPT, a nationally certified personal trainer, Pilates instructor and group fitness instructor with over 20 years in the fitness industry. She has experience at both large and small health clubs and fitness studios, with a varied client base of men and women of all ages. This includes clients with a wide range of goals and needs – general fitness needs, rehabilitative needs, and athletes (golfers, tennis players, and equestrian).
The classes at Core + More focus on using the Pilates reformer as a conditioning and rehabilitative tool, and Pilates mat exercises as a core stabilization and strengthening tool. Free weights, the BOSU balance trainer, medicine balls, slide boards, kettlebells, and your own bodyweight are the other equipment incorporated in the classes and training sessions.
Another goal at Core + More is to reach out to those dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis. After reading the 2009 groundbreaking research article done by the University of Pennsylvania that reversed long-standing advice that breast cancer survivors should avoid lifting weights, (read article here) and seeing first hand the benefits exercise had with a client dealing with a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction, Levengood became certified through the Pink Ribbon Program as a post-rehabilitative breast cancer exercise specialist. Exercise plays a huge role before and after any surgical procedure and course of treatment.
