DEP Inspection of Covanta Plant This Morning Detects No Odor

Below is a portion of a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection inspection (see full report here) conducted this morning due to the complaints of an burning plastic odor in the neighbors right around the plant. We smelled a burning plastic odor on Fayette Street as recently as 11:00 a.m.

According to the DEP report, the inspector did not detect an odor.

We are curious as to what “outside of the plant” means. The plant sits on about 20 acres and during normal operations the steam emitted comes out a tall stack. If the smell is coming from the plant, the location to smell it likely isn’t on the property. We will ask the PADEP for clarification.

More to come.
