Governor Josh Shapiro of Abington and Congresswoman Madeleine Dean of Glenside responded to President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed by the U.S. House today by a vote of 218-214.
The bill now heads to President Trump’s desk, where he is expected to sign it on July 4.
The Shapiro administration previously released estimates of dropped Medicaid and SNAP benefits if the bill is passed. According to PBS, the legislation contains about $4.5 trillion in tax cuts.
Statewide, nearly 144,000 Pennsylvanians who receive SNAP could lose their access to critical food assistance, while 310,000 Pennsylvanians could lose Medicaid coverage, according to the administration. In Dean’s 4th district, which includes most of Montgomery County, the administration estimates that 2,115 will lose SNAP benefits and 10,569 will lose Medicaid coverage.
Shapiro, who in late June announced that he is suing the Trump Administration alongside 19 other states and Washington DC “to stop them from arbitrarily canceling funding owed to Pennsylvania,” posted the following on X.com today:
The federal budget bill Congress just passed is shameful and it is going to hurt Pennsylvania.
