Local golf courses rank among Golfweek’s Top 200 Classic Courses

This week, Golfweek published its list of the Top 200 Classic Courses in the United States. It defines a classic course as being built before 1960. Whitemarsh Township has two courses on the list.

The Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon course in Flourtown tied for the 36th position. The course opened in 1922 and was designed by A.W. Tillinghast.

Whitemarsh Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill tied for 183rd. The course opened in 1908 and was designed by George C. Thomas Jr.

  • Merion Golf Club’s East Course in Ardmore ranked No. 7. It opened in 1912 and was designed by Hugh Wilson
  • Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square ranked 64th. It opened in 1928 and was designed by Donald Ross.
  • Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield (Delco) tied for 110th. It opened in 1926 and was designed by William S. Flynn and Howard C. Toomey
  • Philadelphia Country Club’s Spring Mill Course in Gladwyne tied for 115th. It opened in 1927 and was designed by William S. Flynn and Howard C. Toomey
  • Gulph Mills Golf Club in King of Prussia also tied for 115th. It opened in 1919 and was designed by Donald Ross.
  • Huntingdon Valley Country Club in Huntingdon Valley ranked 133rd. It opened in 1928 and was designed by William S. Flynn and Howard C. Toomey
  • Manufactures’ Golf & Country Club in Fort Washington (Upper Dublin Township) tied for 155th. It opened in 1925 and was designed by William S. Flynn and Howard C. Toomey
