Pieri Restaurant Group’s John Mathas Earns Certified Sommelier Designation

John Mathas (pictured above front left), the general manager of the Pieri Restaurant Group, has earned the designation of Certified Sommelier by the Court of Master Sommeliers. The Pieri Restaurant Group owns The StoneRose, Bar Lucca, Cerdo and Pieri Catering.

“John has a tremendous passion for wine and beverage in the hospitality business,” shared Brian Pieri, owner of the Pieri Restaurant Group. “We challenge our team each year to go out and get better at what they do so we collectively improve as a team. John led by example with this incredible accomplishment. We are all very proud of him at Pieri Restaurant Group and excited to have this tremendous resource for our guests.”

To become a Certified Sommelier, you must pass an examination consisting of sections on tasting, theory and service. In the tasting portion, candidates must describe and identify four wines (two white and two red) to the best of their ability. The theory section tests candidates’ knowledge and understanding of the world of wine, beverage, and the sommelier trade. The final section, covering service, approximates a real restaurant environment, and candidates are expected to demonstrate salesmanship and knowledge while performing a variety of tableside tasks.
