Plymouth Whitemarsh’s Rhianna Gooneratne wins state championship in golf

Plymouth Whitemarsh High School junior Rhianna Gooneratne won the PIAA 3A State Championship this week playing on Penn State University’s Blue Course. Gooneratne made five consecutive birdies in the first round to take a lead over the competition.

“I had some really great birdies,” Gooneratne shared with SuburbanOneSports.com. “On the back nine, I birdied the first five holes. I was just on a roll. It felt good to be making all the putts. It gave me a really good lead for today [first round], which I’m really happy about.”

This is the third year Gooneratne has made the state championship tournament. She finished tied for 14th place as a freshman and tied for 11th as a sophomore.
