Whitemarsh Township to bid trash and recycling services

During the June 9th meeting of Whitemarsh Township’s Board of Supervisors, the supervisors voted to seek bids for the township’s trash and recycling collection and disposal.

The township is currently in the final year of a three-year contract with J. P. Mascaro & Sons. This contract has the option for two, one-year, extensions, however, the township’s staff recommended that the supervisors approve a bidding process.

In 2019, Mascaro was the lone bidder. In addition to awarding Mascaro the contract, the supervisors also chose to utilize landfills owned by Mascaro instead of sending trash to the Covanta plant in Conshohocken (Plymouth Township) to be burned in a “waste to energy” process. Utilizing the landfills cost the households that used the township service an additional $52 a year.

The township expects to advertise the opportunity to bid in July and make a determination in August. It has to notify Mascaro 90 days prior to the end of the year on whether it wants to move forward with the one-year extension.

We would have embedded the video of the short discussion on the issue, but the township has turned off the ability to embed one of its videos to be cued to a specific point in the meeting.
