Church on the Mall not being forced out at the end of the year

There have been some bad reporting and social media posts about the recent news following the announcement that Plymouth Meeting Mall was close to being acquired from PREIT by LA Partners and that a town center focused on sports could replace the bulk of the mall.

The most egregious report came from 6ABC Action News and involved a letter received by the Church on the Mall that was reported to say that the church had to vacate its space within the mall by the end of 2025. That report was later corrected.

What actually happened? All of the tenants received an estoppel letter that notified them that the property was being acquired and that they were now on automatically renewing month-to-month leases. Based on everything we have heard (from people in the know), the mall will continue to function as it is for at least another year.

The Philadelphia Captain, a social media personality, recently walked around the mall making a video and spoke in very general terms about the mall’s closure, without providing any key details. For example, the former Macy’s portion of the mall is not owned by PREIT, was renovated in recent years, and is now home to tenants such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Michaels, Miller’s Ale House, Edge Fitness, and Burlington.

On the other end of the mall, the Boscov’s is also under different ownership. The bookends of the mall, based on every public statement by LA Ventures, are not part of the potential redevelopment. The Philly Captain also couldn’t find the entrance to the interior of the mall while inside Dick’s, and then had to walk around the outside of the mall looking for an entrance.

MoreThanTheCurve.com plans to extensively cover the proposed changes to the mall property, likely over the next four to five years (between approvals, actual construction, and opening). Let us know if there is anything we should focus on.
