Montgomery County will relocate its 9/11 Memorial from the county’s Emergency Operations Center in Eagleville to Elmwood Park in Norristown, the county announced Wednesday. The move aims to make the monument more accessible, as there will be an increased public interest for the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. “Relocating this memorial to a centrally located part of Elmwood Park allows residents of all ages to more easily visit and reflect on this pivotal moment in history,” said Jamila H. Winder, chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners.
The monument will be moved in a procession at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1. The procession will be led by a Norristown Police Department motorcycle escort and include first responders and representatives from across Montgomery County. Members of the public are invited to watch as the monument travels through Lower Providence and West Norriton Townships to Elmwood Park. Public viewing areas are available at the Lower Providence Fire Department, Centennial Park in West Norriton Township, and in Elmwood Park. The county provided a procession map, which can be viewed below.

The 18-foot memorial honors victims and first responders of the 9/11 attacks. It was completed in 2005 by sculptor Sassana Norton, who used an I-beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center to construct the statue. The monument has moved once before from its original location at the Montgomery County Courthouse to Eagleville, due to courthouse construction.
“This memorial stands as a powerful reminder of how communities come together in moments of tragedy,” said Rashaad Bates, Norristown’s Municipal Council President. “We are honored to provide a permanent home where residents can gather to remember, reflect, and pay tribute to those whose lives were forever changed on September 11.”
Along with the procession, there will be a rededication ceremony for the memorial at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 11 at 1325 Harding Boulevard. For more information, visit the Montgomery County’s website here: Homepage | Montgomery County, PA.
