The Colonial School District is the second-best public school district in Montgomery County, according to a study undertaken by the Pittsburgh Business Times. Statewide, Colonial ranks 22nd, slightly better than its 2024 ranking of 23rd. Lower Merion School District was the only Montgomery County district to top Colonial, coming in at third.
This 2025 ranking of school districts across the state is based on examining the most recent three years of available PSSA and Keystone Exams results (2022, 2023, and 2024).
While Colonial has moved up one spot and Lower Merion has held steady at third for a second year, other nearby districts in Montgomery County have declined in the rankings. The Wissahickon School District dropped from 15th to 25th from 2024 to 2025, while Upper Dublin fell from 21st to 28th. Upper Merion slid from 99th to 163rd place. Springfield fell from 84th to 89th.
The two top districts in the state that edged out Lower Merion are Fox Chapel Area and Upper St. Clair, both in Allegheny County.
