Data centers and manufacturers have expressed interest in the idled steel plant in Conshohocken

Cleveland-Cliffs, the owner of the steel plant along Conshohocken Road in Conshohocken (Plymouth Township), announced in May that it would be idling the plant. In its first quarter report, the company cited continuing underperformance and financial losses as the primary reasons for the move.

The Philadelphia Business Journal reported on July 21st that Cleveland-Cliffs shared that it has been receiving inquiries about the property from developers of data centers and manufacturers.

Data centers are being developed worldwide to meet increasing demand. West Conshohocken and Upper Merion are currently considering zoning changes to allow them in an area off River Road on the other side of the Schuylkill River. One key component when operating a data center is access to water to keep the center cool.
