Four Local Churches on List for Possible Closure or Merger

Philly.com reported this morning that the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is examining 46 parishes in the region to “assess their viability and resources.”  Conshy’s three parishes are on the list: St. Matthew on Fayette Street; St. Mary on West Elm; and Sts. Cosmas and Damian at Maple and West 5th Avenue; plus West Conshy’s St. Gertrude.  What are the potential outcomes? From Philly.com:

The process would result in three possible outcomes: parish mergers; no change in structure, with a plan for future sustainability; or a recommendation for future study.

The examination is part of the Parish Area Pastory Planning Initiative, which the Archdiocese started in 2010. Since then the process has closed or merged 30 parishes. In the Philly.com story, an spokesperson for the Archdiocese states that announcements regarding the outcome of the study will be start to be made in the spring of 2014.

Stay tuned.
