Montco DA, law enforcement officials outline ‘The Threat of Machine Gun Conversion Devices’ in new video

The office of Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele released a video today regarding his initiatives to make machine gun conversion devices and switches illegal in Pennsylvania.

“We have an epidemic on our streets being cause by people who have machine gun conversion devices and are using them to hurt others,” DA Steele said in the recording which includes multiple law enforcement officials of the county. “These devices are too cheap, too easy to buy, too easy to manufacture with a 3D printer. We need a law that deals with the possession of these devices, the manufacture of these devices, and if we don’t, we’re fighting this fight with one hand behind our backs.”

From the video’s caption:

A Machine Gun Conversion Device (MGCD)/switch essentially converts a semi-automatic handgun into a machine gun, allowing the criminal to shoot all bullets in the magazine with one pull of the trigger. Approximately 30 bullets can be shot from a handgun in two seconds. Machine gun conversion devices are illegal federally, but the vast majority of prosecutions of gun crimes are charged using state laws. Weapons Prosecutions in Pennsylvania (2017–2022) were: • PA State Courts 33,366 • PA Federal District Courts 1,426 These “switches” are becoming more and more prevalent, and the number of these conversion devices that have been recovered by law enforcement has been rapidly increasing. This video explains why these devices are dangerous for our communities.
