Yesterday the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) announced that PECO customers will see an increase in the electric supply portion of their bill and a decrease in the natural gas supply portion.
According to a press release, PECO’s rate will increase from 10.4 to 11.024 ¢/kWh (+6%). PECO’s service territory encompasses the greater Montgomery County region.
According to a PECO spokesperson, the increase applies to supply rates, which is not something PECO controls. PECO is not raising rates.
From PECO’s website:
As part of the restructuring of Pennsylvania’s electric market, the price of electricity is now based on wholesale market prices.
Deregulation has transformed utilities like PECO from a company that produced electricity to a company that now purchases electricity. PECO purchases electricity, for customers not purchasing the electricity they use from a competitive electric generation supplier, and delivers electricity to all customers through our neighborhood poles and wires.
The PUC is urging customers to learn about switching providers for cheaper rates. For more information on comparing rates, you can visit PA Power Switch.
In December 2024, the PUC approved “smaller than requested rate changes” by PECO for both electric and natural gas distribution services.
