On the agenda for the October 1st meeting of Plymouth Township’s planning commission is an application that seeks a special exception to allow a data center at 900 Conshohocken Road in Conshohocken (Plymouth Township). That property has been the longtime home of the steel plant that was recently idled by the current owner, Cleveland Cliffs.
News of the plant being idled came in May. The consideration of selling the property became public in July, and then it was officially listed in early August.
Data centers have become a hot topic in commercial real estate and development. While more and more are being constructed, there are concerns about their impact on energy grids and their use of water to cool the facility.
Details on the application, such as who submitted it, were not included with the agenda.
Alan Wood Streel dates back to 1826 and opened the plant in Conshohocken in 1832. During the 1970s, it was sold to Luken’s Steel and then went on to be owned by AccelorMital and Cleveland Cliffs.
The planning commission has the opportunity to review the application and make a recommendation to the township’s zoning hearing board.
