Top PGA players to compete in Whitemarsh Township in 2025

The PGA Tour has announced that it will hold the 2025 Truist Championship from May 5-11 at the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon course in Flourtown (Whitemarsh Township). The tournament will be held for one year at the course as its regular venue in North Carolina plays host to the 2025 PGA Championship. According to a source, the PGA Tour expects the tournament to generate approximately $140 million in economic impact for the local community. The tournament is one of eight “Signature Events” on the PGA Tour, with a limited field of the tour’s top players competing for increased prize money and FedExCup points. The fields for these events range from approximately 70 to 80 players and represent the top performers from the previous and current seasons. This allows the tour’s members several different avenues to play their way into the tour’s biggest events outside of the four majors and the Players’ Championship. Rory McIlroy won the tournament in 2024. “The Philadelphia Cricket Club is proud to partner with Truist and the PGA Tour to host this Signature Event in Philadelphia,” said Tom Sheridan, president of the Philadelphia Cricket Club. “The 2025 Truist Championship will bring the 70 best golfers in the world back to Philadelphia which has a rich golf history and played a pivotal role in the evolution of this great game on a national level.” The Wissahickon course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast, who collaborated with fellow Philadelphia Cricket Club members George Thomas and William Flynn. The trio would become three of the most respected American golf course architects of their time. The Wissahickon course opened for play in 1922 and was restored by Keith Foster in 2013-2014. The course has hosted several national and regional events, including the 2016 Senior Players Championship, won by Bernhard Langer. Whitemarsh Township last hosted a regular stop on the PGA Tour in 1980, the last year of the IVB-Philadelphia Golf Classic at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club that had been played since 1963.
