Upper Merion Republican official removed from party positions after endorsing Harris over Trump

MoreThanTheCurve.com reported on August 6th about Michael McCaffery, who while serving as the chair of the Upper Merion Republican Committee went against the party and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for President in an op-ed that appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer. In an email exchange with MoreThanTheCurve.com, McCaffery shared that the party had scheduled a hearing to determine whether or not to remove him from his positions.

Why doesn’t McCaffery like former President Donald Trump? He pointed to comments Trump was alleged to have made about veterans and the events surrounding January 6, 2021. McCaffery is a veteran of Marine Corps and served in Iraq. McCaffery also shared that he had been honest about his feelings for Trump when he ran for the leadership position.

Since that article, McCaffery was interviewed by NBC10 and CNN and was the victim of a “swatting” at his home within the Conshohocken zip code in Upper Merion Township. If you aren’t familiar with “swatting.” it is when police are called to a home over a false violent crime.

The Montgomery County Republican Committee held the hearing on August 19th and party officials decided to remove McCaffery as a member of the Montgomery County Republican Committee for Upper Merion Gulph 2 and as the municipal chair of the Upper Merion Republican Committee. In a letter sent to McCaffery, Christian Nascimento, the chair of the Montgomery County Republican Committee, wrote that the removal was “based on MCRC Bylaws Article XIII, Section 2. A.+ C. “Contributing to, supporting or working for the nominee of any party other than the Republican Party…” Publicly discouraging any voter from voting for the Republican Candidate for any office…”

In the press, McCaffery admitted that he had violated the party’s rules. Nascimento continued “the Committee found that your frequent comments and interviews with the press, even after the
deliverance of the complaint (issued on July 10th, 2024), revealed unrepentance. Further, during the
disciplinary hearing, a continued lack of remorse and admission that you knowingly violated the
bylaws solidified the Committee’s belief that similar behaviors would continue if you were allowed
to retain your seats, only to the detriment of the party.”

The Montgomery County Republican Committee website shows the municipal chair position in Upper Merion as vacant.
