Whitemarsh Township investigating two township employees following threat to cancel vendor contract over Facebook comment

Whitemarsh Township is investigating two township employees following an article published by MoreThanTheCurve.com that revealed an effort by Township Finance Director Kevin Barron to cancel a contract with a vendor.

Barron’s emails with the vendor reveal that he was alerted to a Facebook comment made by the vendor’s owner, which criticized the cancellation of the township’s 4th of July Parade. Barron stated in an email to the vendor that “police personnel” brought it to his attention and had researched the commentator.

According to Whitemarsh Township’s Chief of Police, Christopher Ward, no police officers were involved, and it was a single employee in an administrative role who spoke with Barron.

The official comment from Township Manager Craig McAnnaly is “This is a personnel issue that the Township is investigating.” Personnel matters are one area that mostly falls outside the purview of the Sunshine Act and can be discussed by the supervisors behind closed doors.

More to come.
