  4. Abolition Hall and the Hovenden House, along with a stone barn, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The homestead was a documented stop on the Underground Railroad. After Helen Corson married the artist Thomas Hovenden, they converted the famous hall into their studio. It was here that Hovenden painted The Last Moments of John Brown, Bringing Home the Bride, and Breaking Home Ties. The 10.45-acre homestead is now under agreement of sale to a developer who is proposing a 67-unit townhouse project. Although the firm is not suggesting the removal of the historic structures, the development threatens the integrity of the site. Activist Sydelle Zove and historian David Contosta will present a short documentary, discuss the proposed townhouse project, and take questions. The presentation will take place at the Historical Society of Fort Washington's headquarters at Clifton House (built 1801), 473 S. Bethlehem Pike, Fort Washington. The event is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the Clifton House lot and across the street at Classic Coach Works. Contact Robin Costa at 215-283-7176 with any questions
