The area of Fayette Street between 5th and 6th is under a major transformation.  Since the new year, the Conshohocken Cafe and OBVI, a boutique, have opened.  There is a new bank being built across the street.  There is a vacant space next to the Conshohocken Cafe and another retailer would be great.  I have heard that a cheesesteak place was going to open, however, there hasn’t been any movement in renovating the space.  If the right business opens there, and something viable is done with the empty, and borough owned, Verizon Building at 4th and Fayette, Fayette Street at the mid-avenues will really become a vibrant area instead of being dominated by gas stations.

What community projects are people the most interested in?

On Facebook, MoreThanTheCurve.com ran a very unofficial poll regarding the three proposed community projects.  The poll asked which project most interests you.  The results after about 24 hours were 30 votes for the dog park, 11 for the community garden and nine for the boathouse.  A little about each:

Dog Park

A dog park is still in the conception stage.  According to Borough Council President Paul McConnell, “About 20 people have stepped forward wanting to help make this a reality, so the kick off meeting with these people will be around mid June (date should be firmed early next week).   As such, they will need to first define what a dog park is, and second, based on that definition, come up with a list of possible locations.”

Community Garden

The Borough is in the planing stages of a community garden.  As proposed, it would be located in the grass field on East Elm, across the street from RYAH Yoga and the backside of Edwards-Freeman Nut Company (417 East Elm Street).  The concept is that members of the community would be able to rent plots in the garden and grow their own fruits and vegetables.  If you look at the picture you can see a ground hog that is eager for the garden to be planted.

According to McConnell, ” The community garden is moving forward, too bad not in time for spring planting, but should be open in the next month or two.  The community group putting it together has been working hard since last fall.  The model for how it will work is the same model used by the majority of community gardens throughout south eastern Pennsylvania.  It is a proven model with ready resources so that is good.”

The Boathouse on the River

Are Borough Council and the developers (Malvern Prep and Haverford) on the same page when it comes to the purpose of the Boathouse?  Below are somewhat conflicting statements:

From the Times Herald, ““This is a specialty location, with a special purpose and basically for people to row on the river. It’s not a place for people to pull up with their motor boats and have barbecues,” said Weiss.  Weiss, is Ross Weiss, lawyer for the schools proposing the boathouse.

From the last Borough Newsletter (spring 2011), “The boathouse will give residents recreational access to the Schuylkill River.”  And another mention, “Conshohocken residents will be able to join the CRC (Conshohocken Rowing Center) and use it to gain access to the Schuylkill for rowing, kayaking, and other forms of recreation and sport.”

Should the Borough have a “rowing center” we have a “park with rowing.”  Lets face it, most people will never go on the river, even with kayak and canoe rentals.  So lets discuss it as a piece of prime real estate on the river where we could do things the majority of borough residents will do.  Do you want to have bbq pavilions?  A pavilion for a farmers market.  Horseshoes/volleyball/bocce?  Just a nice manicured area to read a book on the nice day with recreation going on around you?

Meet the Candidates

MoreThanTheCurve.com, PlymouthWhitemarsh.com and the Whitemarsh Business Association have invited all of the local candidates from Conshohocken, Whitemarsh and Plymouth for a Meet the Candidates event on Monday, September 26th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Conshohocken Cafe.  If you are concerned about any of the local issues, this is your chance to speak with those running for office.

So I pass this sign all the time located at the corner of Fayette and Sixth Avenue, but I never really took the time to read what it said.  Why in the world does an elected official have a parking space designated for visitors, when small businesses along Fayette Street are dealing with metered parking and lack of spots for their customers.

The Conshohocken Cafe now has outdoor seating.

Conshohocken’s Niko Amato, who plays lacrosse at the University of Maryland, is considered one of the top goaltenders in the nation.

THIS SATURDAY! The Philadelphia Fight Rugby League Club is hosting the inaugural USA Rugby League 9′s (a tournament). It will be held on Saturday May 28 at the Fight’s home field, A.A. Garthwaite Stadium, located at 11th Avenue and Harry Streets in Conshy. Playing will be 11 teams from around the country and a team from New Zealand. You can learn more about the team, the tournament and the players by clicking here. FYI, last year the Fight hosted the national championship match here in Conshy and it was a great event, even if you know nothing about rugby. So come out for this tournament, enjoy a sunny day, drink a couple beers and learn a little about rugby.

Spamps is having Dueling Piano’s this Friday, May 27th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., plus a bunch of drink specials and their New England Clam Bake.  They are also doing a $20 for $40 Groupon deal (ends tomorrow).
