Protestors seek change in leadership for Montco SPCA citing conditions at the facility in Conshohocken

Approximately 30 protestors gathered on September 24th in front of the Montco SPCA facility at 19 East Ridge Pike in Conshohocken (Whitemarsh Township). The protest follows two articles in The Philadelphia Inquirer in which current and past staff and volunteers shared information and images from the Conshohocken facility that created unsafe and unsanitary conditions for the animals. You can read the articles here and here.

According to the two articles, the Montco SPCA has $67 million in assets, making it wealthy compared to other shelters in the region. The contention is that the organization does not spend enough money on animal welfare and euthanizes animals too quickly and too often.

Just before the protest, state inspectors were seen entering and exiting the facility. According to state records, the facility has been inspected twice annually, with the most recent inspection taking place on August 1st. That inspection found that “The kennel was in compliance with all provisions of the Act and its regulations as of the date and time of this inspection.” The inspection report from September 24th has not yet been published (as of 09/25 at 8:30 a.m.). You can view all the inspection reports here.

The Montco SPCA has not addressed the articles and allegations on its website or social media accounts. In the original article in The Philadelphia Inquirer, the organization’s board members shared that they were taking the allegations “very seriously.”

Below is a statement made on September 24th outside the Conshohocken facility by Jennifer Tucker, a facility volunteer who organized the protest.
