Update on the Potential YMCA in Conshohocken

As we have previously reported, the regional office of the YMCA is seeking a new home for its headquarters and have targeted Conshohocken, not only for its office space, but also a fitness facility. The last we had heard was that there was a plan for the YMCA to take over the management of the Fellowship House, but that plan was rejected by the Fellowship House’s board. The management of the Fellowship House would have complimented the programming at a new YMCA facility.

We also heard from someone with knowledge of the situation that there just isn’t room in the Borough of Conshohocken for one of the large new fitness centers that the YMCA is building. The search had left the borough and was focusing on finding a nearby location in Plymouth or Whitemarsh.

This past weekend the Philadelphia Inquirer published a story regarding the success of the YMCA’s new facility in Haverford Township and it mentioned the search in Conshohocken. From the Inquirer:

The YMCA still wants a new branch in that area, Flynn said, and the search for a site has expanded into King of Prussia and Conshohocken. Another multimillion-dollar building is under construction in Upper Hanover, Montgomery County, for the Upper Perkiomen Valley YMCA.

The Flynn quoted by the Inquirer is John Flynn, president of the Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA. We have followed this story from the beginning and believe that what the quote was meant to stay is that the search has now expanded beyond Conshohocken and now also includes King of Prussia. The original plan, based on the conversations we had and Power Point presentation we viewed, only mentioned Conshohocken.

So as of now, that is where it stands regarding a YMCA coming to Conshy.
