Lafayette Hill’s Joey O’Brien, a rising senior at La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, has committed to continue his education and play football for the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. O’Brien made the announcement on June 20th. Before selecting the Fighting Irish, he seriously considered Penn State, Clemson, and the University of Oregon. O’Brien was listed as one of the top prospects for the class of 2026.
“Joey is not only a phenomenal athlete, but also a leader in our community,” said La Salle College High School Athletic Administrator Bob Zanneo just before O’Brien’s announcement, “His commitment decision is the culmination of years of hard work, and the La Salle Community is proud to support him as he takes the next step.”
O’Brien has been recognized as the Philadelphia Catholic League MVP, a First Team All-State selection, and a MaxPreps All-American. In 2025, he helped lead La Salle to the 2025 Catholic League Red Division Championship. In the classroom, he has earned a 3.8 GPA.
In an ESPN report on O’Brien’s selection of Notre Dame, O’Brien shared that he selected Notre Dame due to the defensive background and type of system run by Head Coach Marcus Freeman and Defensive Backs Coach Mike Mickens. O’Brien went on to say that he felt these factors would help him reach the NFL. O’Brien played both wide receiver and defensive back for La Salle. It is anticipated that he will focus on the safety position at the college level.
This is the third O’Brien we have reported on. His two older sisters, Taylor and Jordan, were also college athletes. Taylor played college basketball for Bucknell and Florida State, and currently plays professionally in Europe. Jordan ran track first for Saint Joseph’s University and then Florida Atlantic University, where she recently graduated. Younger sister, Tori, currently runs track for the Conshohocken Electric Force and recently competed in the New Balance Nationals held at Penn and will be competing this weekend at the AAU Regional in Millersville. She also plays Girls Flag Football.
